By the beginning of World War II, the United States came up with a very small Marine Corps - about 60 thousand people. However, the combat load on the Marines turned out to be the most intense. No major operation in the Pacific was complete without the involvement of the Marine Corps. The Marines found themselves in the first wave of landings, were at the forefront of the offensive, building on their initial success, and defended if necessary. The Corps was most successful when used for its intended purpose: assault units of the airborne forces. The Battle of Guadalcanal, the landings on Tarawa, Bougainville, Tinian, Guam, Saipan, Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa made the US Marine Corps one of the most effective forces of its kind on the planet.
