The so-called diving goggles or goggles were developed and built by CKD in Prague. The first prototypes of the class T 478.3 diesel locomotive were built in 1968. A total of 408 of the distinctive locomotives were built.
The diving goggles have gone through a number of color variants over the course of time, from 1988 red with a yellow band and gray roof became the standard finish.
